It’ll be quite a week ahead for the Brooklyn-based composer and pianist Timo Andres. Not only is his new album coming out on Nonesuch Records, but Friday also sees the world premiere of his latest piano concerto, Made of Tunes (2023), with Aaron Diehl as soloist and John Adams conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition, on Tuesday, Andres is to appear in the orchestra’s Green Umbrella series alongside fellow pianists Anton Batagov, Lara Downes, Jenny Lin, and Maki Namekawa, presenting the LA audiences with the complete set of Philip Glass’s Etudes for Piano (1991-2012).
In the midst of preparations for all this as well as the New York City premiere of the Sufjan Stevens, Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury show Illinoise at Park Avenue Armory, for which Andres provided orchestrations and arrangements, the composer-pianist is in good spirits as we sit down for a thorough discussion over a Zoom call, aiming to cover all this – and more – starting with the forthcoming first performances of Made of Tunes.
