Rule of Three: A Metropolis Ensemble Development Residency

Metropolis Ensemble presents a three-concert development residency with Rule of Three, a newly formed trio of Yale alumni Chelsea Lane (harp), Ginevra Petrucci (flute), and Colin Brookes (viola).

Taking Debussy's iconic Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp as a point of departure, the series traces the trio's sonic lineage across three programs — first deconstructing Debussy's musical DNA, then exploring composers who have deliberately broken from its idiom, and finally transforming the ensemble's sound through the addition of electronics.

Program 1: Deconstruction

Sunday, March 1, 2pm

Works by Debussy, Bax, Takemitsu, and Danielle Eva Schwob

Program 2: Reconstruction

Sunday, April 26, 7:30pm

Works by Timo Andres, Kaija Saariaho, Jessica Meyer, and a new commission by Evan Henry

Program 3: Transformation

Sunday, May 31, 7:30pm

Works by Anna Clyne, Sofia Gubaidulina, Angélica Negrón, and Leilehua Lanzilotti

Three voices. Three programs. One evolving conversation.

About The Ensemble

Rule of Three is a classical ensemble formed of NYC-based musicians and Yale University alumni Chelsea Lane (harp), Ginevra Petrucci (flute), and Colin Brookes (viola). The trio takes its name from the timeless artistic principle that elements grouped in threes create harmony, balance, and a sense of completeness. With harp, viola, and flute—three contrasting voices blending into one—the ensemble embodies this rule in sound, weaving textures that are at once delicate, dynamic, and whole. Rule of Three curates programs that combine storytelling with compelling thematic arcs, performing not only core repertoire but also championing contemporary works and collaborating with composers to create new music for the trio.
