“If you were to take a piece typically scored for two or four pianos and expand it across mallet instruments, woodwinds, strings, and a concert grand, this is the result of that experiment. In Simeon ten Holt’s minimalist masterpiece Canto Ostinato, performers take the wheel, deciding how long sections last, when to move on, and which instruments play what. Most performances run about 90 minutes while some stretch past four hours. Metropolis Ensemble, Erik Hall, and Sandbox Percussion built their own version of it, premiered it at Brooklyn Botanic Garden for over 3,000 people at sunrise and sunset, and released a studio recording this month.
Go if: you want to know what happens when minimalism becomes a group experiment.”
