Dane Johansen
Cello

Regarded as one of the foremost cellists of his generation, American cellist Dane Johansen performs extensively throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician and as a member of the Escher String Quartet. Praised for his "brave virtuosity" and "staggering aplomb" by The New York Times and New York Magazine, Johansen debuted at Lincoln Center under Maestro James Levine performing Elliott Carter's Cello Concerto in celebration of the composer's centennial.

This past season included tours of China and the United Kingdom, performances at the Louvre, Shriver Hall, Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall and collaborations with Pinchas Zukerman, David Shifrin, Sacha Cooke and Jason Vieaux. He has performed at the Marlboro Music Festival and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival and recently appeared at the City of London Festival, the Harrogate International Festival and the Cheltenham Music Festival.

As cellist of the Escher String Quartet, Johansen records for the Naxos and Bis labels, with quartet cycles of Mendelssohn and Zemlinsky scheduled for release in 2012. The Quartet is in residence with BBC Radio 3 in London as New Generation Artists, and in New York as Artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mr. Johansen studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris and at the Juilliard School where he earned the Artist Diploma. His mentors include Joel Krosnick, Bernard Greenhouse, Richard Aaron, David Soyer, and the Emerson String Quartet. Johansen is on faculty at The Juilliard School as assistant to Joel Krosnick.
